10 Best Day Trips from Agadir by Rental Car (2026 Guide)

Published: April 4, 2026 | By Bercy Car Team

Agadir's sunny beaches are wonderful — but the real magic of southern Morocco lies just beyond the city limits. With a rental car, you can explore ancient walled cities, hidden mountain valleys, wild Atlantic coastlines, and Berber villages that most tourists never see.

Here are our 10 favourite day trips from Agadir by car, complete with driving times, route tips, and insider advice from our team who drive these roads every day.

1. Paradise Valley — The Hidden Oasis in the Atlas Foothills

Distance: 60 km | Driving time: 1 hour | Best car: Any (road is paved)

Tucked into the foothills of the Atlas Mountains, Paradise Valley is a palm-lined canyon with turquoise natural pools and small waterfalls. It's one of the most beautiful spots in southern Morocco — and most visitors to Agadir never even hear about it.

What to see and do:

  • Swim in the rock pools — the water is refreshing from April to October
  • Walk the canyon trail — an easy hike through stunning scenery
  • Roadside stalls — pick up local honey, argan oil, and amlou (almond-argan spread)
  • Fresh tagine — small restaurants along the route serve excellent traditional food

Driving tips:

Take the N8 towards Imouzzer Ida Outanane. The road is well-paved but winding through the mountains. Go on weekdays to avoid weekend crowds from Agadir.

Why you need a car: Public transport doesn't reach Paradise Valley — a rental car is the only practical way to visit.

2. Taghazout — Morocco's Surf Capital

Distance: 19 km | Driving time: 25 minutes | Best car: Any car

This laid-back fishing village turned surf destination is one of the most charming stops on the Moroccan coast. With world-class breaks, rooftop cafes, and a bohemian atmosphere, Taghazout is perfect for a half-day escape from Agadir.

What to see and do:

  • Anchor Point and Hash Point — famous surf breaks (check our guide to surf spots near Agadir)
  • Rooftop cafes — enjoy fresh juice and ocean views
  • Surf shops and boutiques — browse local crafts and surf gear
  • Walk to Tamraght — the neighbouring village has its own relaxed vibe
  • Surf lessons — several schools offer beginner lessons year-round

Driving tips:

Take the N1 north — the drive offers scenic ocean views the entire way. Parking in Taghazout village is tight, so arrive early, especially on weekends.

Combine with: Timlalin sand dunes or Aghroud Beach on the way back.

3. Essaouira — The Wind City on the Atlantic

Distance: 175 km | Driving time: 2.5–3 hours | Best car: Any car (highway)

Essaouira is a UNESCO World Heritage city with a stunning blue-and-white medina, dramatic Atlantic ramparts, and one of Morocco's most vibrant fishing ports. It's the most popular full-day trip from Agadir — and for good reason.

What to see and do:

  • Walk the ramparts — explore the 18th-century sea walls with cannon emplacements
  • Fishing port — watch the daily catch come in and eat grilled fish at the harbour stalls
  • Medina souks — less pushy than Marrakech, with excellent woodwork and art galleries
  • Goats in argan trees — a famous sight along the road from Agadir

Driving tips:

Take the N1 coastal highway north. The road passes through argan tree forests — watch for the famous tree-climbing goats. Park outside the medina walls (paid parking lots available).

Why drive yourself: Leave early, avoid the tour bus crowds, stop at argan oil cooperatives along the way, and stay for a sunset dinner before driving back.

4. Taroudant — The Little Marrakech

Distance: 80 km | Driving time: 1 hour 15 minutes | Best car: Any car

Often called "Little Marrakech," Taroudant is a beautifully preserved walled city with red-mud ramparts set against a dramatic Atlas Mountain backdrop. It has all the atmosphere of Marrakech but without the crowds.

What to see and do:

  • Walk or cycle the 7 km walls — the complete circuit of the ramparts is spectacular
  • Arab Souk — spices, textiles, and traditional goods
  • Berber Souk — leather, pottery, and silver jewellery
  • Visit the tannery — see traditional leather-making up close
  • Lunch in a riad — several beautiful riads serve excellent Moroccan cuisine

Driving tips:

Take the N10 east — the road is straight and fast, passing through orange and olive groves. Park at Bab El Kasbah for easy access to the medina.

Insider tip: Taroudant is far less touristy than Marrakech, so souk prices are more genuine. It's a great place to buy leather goods and silver jewellery.

5. Tiznit — The Silver Capital of Morocco

Distance: 95 km | Driving time: 1 hour 15 minutes | Best car: Any car

Tiznit is famous throughout Morocco for its silver jewellery tradition. This charming walled city with distinctive pink walls is a wonderful half-day trip, especially when combined with Legzira Beach.

What to see and do:

  • Jewellery Souk — browse hundreds of silver artisan workshops and stalls
  • Grand Mosque — admire the unique minaret from the outside
  • Source Bleue — a natural spring within the medina walls
  • Pink ramparts — walk sections of the distinctive city walls

Driving tips:

Take the N1 south. The road is excellent. Combine Tiznit with Legzira Beach for a full day trip — Legzira is about 55 km further south.

6. Legzira Beach — The Iconic Red Arches

Distance: 150 km | Driving time: 2 hours | Best car: Any car

Legzira Beach is famous for its dramatic natural red-stone arches carved by the Atlantic Ocean. One arch collapsed in 2016, making the remaining formations even more precious. The wild, rugged coastline here is unlike anything else in Morocco.

What to see and do:

  • The red arches — photograph the stunning natural rock formations
  • Wild coastline — walk along the dramatic cliffs and beach
  • Swimming — possible but be careful of strong currents
  • Fresh fish restaurants — simple beachside eateries serve the daily catch
  • Sunset photos — the light on the red arches at golden hour is spectacular

Driving tips:

Take the N1 south past Tiznit, then follow signs to Sidi Ifni/Legzira. The road is paved and in good condition all the way.

Pro tip: Visit at low tide for the best views and access to the arches. Check tide times before you go.

7. Immouzzer Ida Outanane — Waterfalls and Honey

Distance: 60 km | Driving time: 1 hour | Best car: Any car

This mountain village sits at 1,200 metres above sea level and is famous for its waterfall, local honey, and the annual honey festival. The drive up from Agadir is one of the most scenic short routes in the region.

What to see and do:

  • The waterfall — at its best from February to May after winter rains
  • Honey festival — an annual celebration of the region's famous thyme honey
  • Thursday souk — a traditional weekly market with local produce and crafts
  • Mountain scenery — stunning views of the Atlas foothills and valleys

Driving tips:

The road features switchbacks climbing from the coast into the mountains. The route passes through Paradise Valley — combine both destinations for a perfect full-day trip.

8. Souss-Massa National Park — Birdwatching and Wildlife

Distance: 65 km | Driving time: 1 hour | Best car: Dacia Duster or SUV recommended

This protected coastal reserve is home to the critically endangered Northern Bald Ibis, over 250 bird species, and a wild landscape of river estuaries, sand dunes, and scrubland. It's a must for nature lovers.

What to see and do:

  • Northern Bald Ibis — one of the world's rarest birds, with a colony here
  • 250+ bird species — flamingos, herons, eagles, and many more
  • Tifnit village — a quiet fishing village on the park's coast
  • Gazelles and jackals — with patience, you may spot these in the reserve

Driving tips:

Take the N1 south. Some tracks within the park are unpaved — an SUV like the Dacia Duster from our fleet is ideal. A standard car can reach the main access points but won't handle the rougher tracks.

9. Tafraout — Painted Rocks and the Anti-Atlas

Distance: 170 km | Driving time: 2.5–3 hours | Best car: Any car (paved road)

Tafraout sits in a valley of extraordinary pink granite boulders in the Anti-Atlas mountains. The landscape feels almost otherworldly, with the famous Painted Rocks — massive boulders painted in bright colours by Belgian artist Jean Veran in 1984 — adding to the surreal atmosphere.

What to see and do:

  • Painted Rocks — Jean Veran's colourful boulder art installation from 1984
  • Ameln Valley — hike through Berber villages clinging to the mountainsides
  • Pink granite landscape — massive boulder formations in extraordinary shapes
  • Almond trees — if visiting in February, the valley is covered in blossoms

Driving tips:

Take the N1 to Tiznit, then the R104 inland. This is the most scenic drive on this list — the road winds through spectacular Anti-Atlas mountain passes. Fill up your tank in Tiznit as petrol stations are sparse beyond.

Important: Leave Agadir by 7 AM to have enough time to explore and return before dark.

10. Marrakech — The Red City

Distance: 260 km | Driving time: 3–3.5 hours | Best car: Any car (highway A7)

Morocco's most famous city is within reach of Agadir for a long day trip, though we recommend spending at least one night. The A7 toll highway makes the drive comfortable and fast.

What to see and do:

  • Jemaa el-Fna — the legendary main square with storytellers, musicians, and food stalls
  • Bahia Palace — stunning 19th-century palace with intricate tilework
  • Saadian Tombs — beautifully decorated 16th-century royal tombs
  • Medina souks — a labyrinth of markets selling everything imaginable
  • Majorelle Garden — the famous blue garden created by Yves Saint Laurent
  • Rooftop lunch — enjoy tagine with views over the medina rooftops

Driving tips:

Take the A7 toll highway — tolls cost approximately 100 MAD each way. The road is in excellent condition. Park outside the medina in one of the supervised car parks (Jemaa el-Fna underground parking is convenient).

Recommendation: Rent an extra day and spend a night in Marrakech. You'll see much more and can enjoy the magical atmosphere of Jemaa el-Fna at night.

Tips for Driving Around Agadir

Driving in Morocco is straightforward, but here are some tips to make your day trips stress-free. For more detailed information, visit our FAQ page.

Before you go

  • Drive on the right — Morocco drives on the right-hand side of the road
  • Speed limits — 60 km/h in towns, 100 km/h on national roads, 120 km/h on motorways
  • Driving licence — your national licence is valid for visits up to one year (international licence recommended but not required for most nationalities)
  • Fuel — petrol stations are common on major routes; fill up before mountain drives to remote areas
  • Choose a trusted rental company — always rent from a reputable company to avoid issues (see our guide to avoiding rental scams)

On the road

  • Mountain roads — take your time on winding mountain routes; use your horn on blind corners
  • Police checkpoints — these are common and routine; have your licence and rental documents ready
  • Tolls — the A7 motorway to Marrakech has toll booths; keep small change or banknotes handy
  • Road conditions — major roads (N-roads and motorways) are in excellent condition; secondary roads vary
  • Animals on roads — watch for donkeys, goats, and pedestrians, especially in rural areas

Parking

  • Guardians (gardiens) — unofficial parking attendants are common; a tip of 5–10 MAD when you return is expected
  • Medina parking — never try to drive into a medina; park outside the walls in designated areas
  • Supervised car parks — available in all major towns; typically 10–20 MAD for a few hours
